7-Day Japan Itinerary
Seven days is enough for one strong route, not for the whole country. The classic first-timer loop — Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka — keeps travel legs short and puts you on the shinkansen only twice.
- Best route
- Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka
- Rail legs
- 2 shinkansen journeys
- Typical budget
- $1,400–2,600 per person
- Pace
- Balanced, 2–3 sights per day
How to split the week
Give Tokyo three nights, Kyoto two and Osaka two. Arrive into Haneda or Narita and fly home from Kansai so you never backtrack.
- ◆Days 1–3 Tokyo: Senso-ji, Shibuya, Akihabara, one day trip or teamLab
- ◆Days 4–5 Kyoto: Fushimi Inari at sunrise, Arashiyama, Gion after dark
- ◆Days 6–7 Osaka: Kuromon Market, Dotonbori, Nara as a half-day
Should you buy a Japan Rail Pass?
For a seven-day Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip, individual tickets are usually cheaper than a nationwide pass. Buy point-to-point shinkansen seats and use an IC card for city transport.
What most people over-plan
Two neighbourhoods a day is plenty in Tokyo, and Kyoto's temples take longer than the map suggests. Build in one unstructured afternoon — it is almost always the day people remember.
