Kyoto Itinerary

Kyoto rewards early risers more than any other city in Japan. The same photograph taken at 6:30am and 10am tells two completely different stories.

Group temples by geography

Kyoto's sights sit in three clusters: eastern Higashiyama, northwestern Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji, and western Arashiyama. Do one cluster per half day and never cross the city twice.

  • Sunrise: Fushimi Inari before the tour buses
  • Morning: Arashiyama bamboo grove and the monkey park
  • Afternoon: Nishiki Market, then a tea ceremony
  • Evening: Gion lanes and dinner on Pontocho alley

Eating in Kyoto

Obanzai set lunches are the best value in the city. Save the kaiseki splurge for one evening and book it before you arrive.

Day trips

Nara is 35 minutes away, Osaka 29 minutes, and Kurama onsen sits half an hour into the mountains — all easy returns before dinner.
